Whence Cometh Western Civ?
The recent events in Charlottesville have brought up all sorts of issues in our country. One of the foremost issues is the issue of white supremacy now embodied in a movement called the alt-right. Jared Taylor, founder of American Renaissance; an alt-right group, defines the movement as follows. "We are a broad, dissident movement that includes many different websites, organizations, and viewpoints...But they all agree on one thing: equality is a dangerous myth. The alt-right is united in rejecting the current dogma that all races are equal...There is no reason to think that non-whites can maintain Western Civilization--the civilization that whites created." This is, of course, ridiculous. And there are many angles from which we could approach this manure pile of a paragraph. So let's take just one. Western Civilization is a mystery to many. There are nations across the world who aim to organize themselves based on reason, science, and justice. How does this happen? The problem with attributing all this cultural progress to "whiteness" is the old correlation/causation problem. But the question remains: whence cometh Western Civ? The Christian answer is simple: it's the grace of God. This becomes clearer when we use the old word for Western Civilization; and that's Christendom. I want to be clear. By "the grace of God" I don't mean just some puffy cloud of sweetness that lands on a society willy-nilly. By "the grace of God," I mean God himself. And God's gift of himself is what we mean by the gospel. Jesus is Lord of the whole world and now the whole world may be reconciled to God. So the gift of Christendom is the gift of Christ. We cannot have one without the other. However, when you try to account for Christendom without Christ, what you get is alt-right lunacy. That or you try to hold on to reason, science, and justice with no foundation in God. Like Jill in the Silver Chair, we want Aslan's water, but we would be very pleased if the lion himself would just move along. But if what we want is water, we must come to God. There is no other stream.Â
